![]() What exactly that is depends on the context. The important part is to find a notation that makes sense, is consistent, and easily readable. 3 beats: called a dotted minim (dotted half note) 2 beats: called a minim (half note) What piano note. It has a value of two beats, the same as a minim note. There isn't an universal rule for all of this though. The minim rest (or half note rest) is a small rectangle that is very similar to the semibreve rest but, instead of hanging from the second line it sits on the middle line of the stave. #DOTTED MINIM REST FULL#Personally I would only use a dotted rest if it either fills out a whole beat or bar (such as a dotted quarter note in a 6/8 or a dotted half note in a 3/4), or if it is -directly- followed by a note that complements it, like a dotted half note pause followed by a quarter note in a 4/4, or a dotted eighth note followed by a 16th note to complement a full quarter etc.). Generally it's more customary to separate pauses than notes anyways. Whole Note (Semibreve), Whole note (Semibreve), 32, Whole note (Semibreve). An exception would be very rhythmically complex music where it might be helpful to really separate every quarter beat. Notes, Duration (if metronome 150), Rests. The dot symbol can be added to any of the rest symbols for the same effect on the duration as adding a dot to a note. The example below shows a dotted minim rest, which is of three crotchets duration. A dot after a note tells the musician that the note or rest should be held half again as long as its normal duration. #DOTTED MINIM REST PLUS#Writing a dotted quarter note followed by an eighth note in 4/4 time certainly isn't a problem, in most cases. Dots and rests While rests cannot be tied together, they can be dotted. How many crotchets are there in a semibreve plus a minim 11. Updated on 11/04/19 Notes and rests are dottedthat is to say, a dot is placed to the right of the note or restto indicate that the length of time the note is played or the rest is held should be changed in a piece of music. Grouping several beats together is perfectly fine, but grouping notes that last for example two and a half beat can be problematic. "Not grouping across beats" generally only refers to cases where the grouping doesn't end on a whole beat: I.e. ![]()
